What to see in Carloforte and itinerary to visit the Island of San Pietro

The town and its surroundings

Find out the best Itineraries.

Carloforte is the only inhabited village of the island of San Pietro, which has been entitled amongst one of the best in Italy. It has a very unique history: from 1873 it became a genoese colony of people from the island of Tabarka and nowadays it still preserves intact its traditions along with its language. Having a stroll downtown you will experience a crystallized reality of that ancient time: old arches and small narrow alleys, the echoes of the traditional language; everything melted with the modernity of touristic services.

What To do

Here a suggestion of the most interesting places to visit in Carloforte to make your holiday unforgettable. Please ask at our reception for more information.

The architecture of  Carloforte is the typical one of a fisherman village: tiny colored houses, narrow street and pathway, gardens and flowers. Everything is within walking distance. Well equipped with a camera, you can start your visit from Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, on the seafront and admire the monument dedicated to the memory of the Savoy King  who first consent the settlement of the people from Tabarka.

Going forward you will find a square named “Piazza dei Rotondi” due to the 4 rounded bench where you can plesantly rest under the shadow of its high trees.

In Via Solferino is the famous “Archiotto”, a white stone arch giving the access to the old part of the village, which we invite you to experience by long relaxing walks.

Following the street running along the saltworks you will get to the Museum “Museo Multimediale della Torre di San Vittorio”, and learn more about the History and the traditions of the Island.
Amongst the things to see in Carloforte we suggest the visit of the remains of the old walls, built to protect the village from the barbarian raids.

Excursions in the hinterland

Everywhere in the surrounding area of the Village is countryside: silence, nature and perfumes.

Do not miss the chance to visit the Lighthouse in the area of Capo Sandalo. The building emerges from the distance in the midst of sharpen rocks and verdant bush. From here, you  can enjoy the silence of the Island and amdire the immaculate nature of the “Golfo del Becco” and maybe be lucky to meet the rare Corse seagull.

This area is an official OASIS protected by LIPU (a charitable organisation for birds protection) as well as “Cala Fico”, a fantastic place to swim.

The old Saltworks are located not far away from the village. Anymore functioning, nowadays they become the natural habitat of different birds amongst which is the famous Pink Famingo.

The Island has many fantastic natural marine caves, all reachable by the sea. We suggest you at least the visit of “Grotte della Mezzaluna” and “Punta delle Oche”.

The Staff of Lu' Hote Riviera is happy to give all the information and help you to organize the tour of the Island as well as different excursions.
